D&T passed the music meme to me. A blog chain letter that asks:
1. Total volume of music;
2. Last CD I bought;
3. Song playing right now;
4. Five songs that I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me; and
5. Five people to whom I am passing along the chain letter.
I won't be passing this on, because I don't think it asks the right questions. Volume of music? WTF? The only conclusion that could be made from perusing the 100 or so CDs that I own is that I don't buy a lot of music and that my acquisition habits are pretty haphazard. For starters, I rarely buy pop music. Don't get me wrong, I love mainstream pop music it's the mainstay of my musical diet. But I listen for free, to the radio, because I can, because I am lazy.
I love a pretty voice and I don't care about lyrics (one of the joys of hearing loss is never hearing the lyrics). Coldplay, scourge of the intelligentsia is right up my alley with pretty male vocals and ethereal piano. It's calming and that's good when I'm stuck in traffic and considering ramming the clueless moron in the Ford Aerostar bimbo box to starboard.
My music collection is perhaps all the stranger for the music that I don't own. Many don't know that I'm a classically trained musician. I played French Horn for 7 years and jazz trumpet for an additional 3. So it is surprising that there I own no Mozart CDs outside of the Requiem, I have no Buxtehude. The truth is I'd go bankrupt trying to collect the vast categories repretoires of artists whose music moves me. Equally, I own no electronica, outside of a Kruder & Dormeister bootleg, yet I love club music.
This is making me realize just how much I want a mega capacity iPod. *sigh*
Finishing up...
there aren't 5 songs that I listen to a lot. There are many songs, and they are wildly disparate, 5 for now:
Under Pressure, Queen
Danny boy (Londonderry Air), Irish Tradition (written by an English lawyer)
Adagio in G minor, Tommaso Albinoni
Adagio for strings, Samuel Barber
weird Jazz Standard, Nature Boy
+ the excessively wrong version of my theme song, Baby Got back.
I think I should go listen to some music.
