Happy birthday to me

A woman I admire and respect says that her father celebrates his birthday every year as a victory in the battle of Them v. Me. Her father has suffered a lot of adversity and in some ways his attitude makes a lot of sense.

This has been a harsh year marked by advancing decrepitude, crippling depression, lonliness and shattered dreams.

Nevertheless, I have things to be thankful for:

Friends who love me, who take the time and energy to show it
evidence that my brain still works
a place to live, and a job
the best roommate in the world (he began cooking for me when I gave up eating)
