As much as I love living in Coffee-Train town, it has the decided disadvantage of being geographically distant from many of my oldest friends.
My old climbing partner and his wife live in NJ. My college roommate lives in NJ. Darling EEK lives in Louisville, my favorite Sailor lives in Ohio, my former flatmate lives in Denver, CO and a different partner in crime lives near Golden, CO. Those are just the Americans.
Earlier this spring, my college roommate gave birth to a lovely baby girl. A month and a half ago, she called and asked if I would be willing to be the girl's godmother. I said yes, and today began another life's chapter of skipping fly-overland to get to the other side.
My day started early with a 5am wake-up call. This wasn't one of those mornings when you loll about in bed, ignoring the clock radio and snuggling with that warm hunk of boy (or kitty cat, or hot water bottle, you know, whatever's available). No, this was a roll out of bed and into the clothes you laid out last night, the morning's hygiene limited to a healthy swipe of pit stick and a thorough brushing of hair and teeth. Yes, different brushes.
Less than an hour later I was hustling through airport security, juggling my driver's license, my boarding pass, my baggy of lipgloss and complexion cream, all while struggling out of my heavy overcoat and firmly tied doc marten's trying not to hold up the line or lose anything important.
Metric tons of green house gasses later, I'm in New Jersey. I've seen Philly and Trenton. I've made like Washington and crossed the Delaware. I have no clue as to my actual location as the sun was setting by the time my plane hit tarmac. I did see some highway signs that said Princeton, so I'm probably near there. Despite the small time lag, I'm still waiting for my soul to catch up. Hopefully it will have joined me by morning.
