Online Submissions at the Patent Office
Holy WikiPatenta, Batman! I think the nerds down at the Patent Office stayed up all night with the Open Source dorks, snorting Maker's Mark, huffing nitrous and making DIY porn in the server room. This morning the Washington Times reports that the PTO is now going to allow online patent submission. But wait, there's more! Comments to the applications are to be welcomed and a comment hierarchy will be established. For the first time ever public commentary will be given. How they separate the poseurs, or worse yet saboteurs from those with meaningful commentary is yet to be seen. I predict great sillyness when it comes down to a court's application of 35 USC Sec 102(a). Booya.
World's most expensive swim fin put to good use
Yahoo picked up a Reuters article about corporate good deeds for a change. A bottlenose dolphin named Fuji at an acquarium on Okinawa, Japan was left tail-less following an operation. Apparently Manx dolphins don't survive well in their environment. No tail means no swim. No swim means bloat up like whale, then die. An employee at Bridgestone Japan (the tire manufacturer) developed a protheses for little Fuji. Click here for picture and full article about Fuji & her moderniste fluke.

This had me totally gigglicious when I read about it :-)
I'm on the "Open Source dorks" side of things but as you know, am totally interested in this sort of stuff.
They're also going to use a complex moderation system where peers moderate public comments and the ones moderated more insightful, etc get pushed up the chain and add credibility to the user, similar to Slashdot.org (in fact, they consulted with the founder of Slashdot for this moderation system)
