Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. No, that's not it. Try again.
Of all the things I don't get to do while in law school, I miss reading for pleasure most of all. I sink into books for hours, days, surfacing only for barest essentials. Books join me for dinner, a bath, a bottle of Italian wine. Books are the only thing that is not made better with the addition of friends. On the flight back from NYC I ripped through Good Omens(Gaiman & Pratchet). It was like dipping my brain in the tastiest mug of English tea and letting it soak for a couple of hours. Tonight on my way home from school, I intend to plunge into Fortress of Solitude (Lethem, yay!) for some Brooklyn attitude. D&T set me up with some books, but some of my taste in fiction runs askew of his, and I still have the MAMMOTH biography of Alexander Hamilton (yay!) awaiting. On top of all that I'd like to re-read both 1984 (saw brilliant T-shirt the other day "National Security Agency: 1984 - We're behind schedule) and Monkey Wrench Guide.
If that is not enough, I have an entire grocery bag of books awaiting and others to be borrowed from friends...
..Oh yeah, and I also have 300 pages a week from Aspen publishing's 3d ed of Family Law. I'm really wishing I had taken Law & Literature. Last night they read & discussed Merchant of Venice; I saw the other required readings in the bookstore. I want to be in that class!

I really liked Fortress of Solitude, and if you've read The Rules of Attraction (Bret Easton Ellis) some parts are downright hilarious.
If fantasy is your think Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is pretty good. Very modern Dickensian.
When I want a good Down With Skool read where my mind just soaks in plot and words and language I usually head over to Wilkie Collins or Charles Dickens. Especially old Wilkie. There's nothing to bring me back to cheeriness faster than a good mystery novel.
