My favorite cafe is in a building that, had the community not intervened, was slated to be a RiteAid. Instead, the large, well-lit building with huge windows and an airy feel is a privately run cafe. It's a fabulous cafe. They have free wireless, comfortable chairs, couches, a fireplace, healthy offerings of sandwiches and salads, not-so-healthy offerings of sweet baked goods and endless rivers of coffee and tea. Even better, this cafe is also an art gallery. The walls are such that they can and do show about 10-15 serious artists at a time, changing artists frequently. Right now over my shoulder is an interpretation of Maurice Sendak's work called Where the Dead Things Are. Brilliant. This cafe supports artists. From that perspective, that they have open mike nights for prose, poetry, and music is entirely consistent. Tonight is open mike music and has been better than expected. Most of the musicians this far have not been horrifically talentless, something I feared walking in.
Unfortunately, this is not terribly conducive to studying. I spent all afternoon with my study partner creating a Monster Chart of every crime we have gone over this semester. It took over 5 hours, but all the elements are in place, and a separate table covers defenses and indicates those which are applicable to multiple varieties of crime, and those which apply only specifically. I had hoped that I would be able to add the Model Penal Code equivalents, as well as a table detailing culpability covering topics such as accomplice and vicarious liablility. Instead I've been checking e-mail, blogging, using IM and people watching. All of that is fun, and I did need something of a break, but I guess I'd best get back to it.
