Sounds like it should suck. It doesn't always. For several years I went on solo backpacking trips over Thanksgiving. You get all the trails to yourself.
This morning I babysat for some friends. The Hubs planned an all day bike trip without leaving his wife an opportunity to do anything for herself at all. Me to the rescue. She got to go to the gym and treat herself for a bit, while her daughters and I played out in the sunshine in some other kid's yard.
After that I treated the whole day like a holiday. I intended to have cos, pomagranate and shaved fennel salad along with steamed broccoli and a 4 oz brick of ground turkey pan-seared, then slow-cooked in compound butter. Unfortunately I only got as far as the turkey and an appetizer of curried zucchini-yoghurt soup.
For the last several hourse I've been using my friend Mona's foolproof cure for the common cold to treat my out of control hay fever. I doubt hot mulled wine really makes a difference, but I definitely feel better, or at least less crappy.
There's a cranberry apple crisp baking in the oven. I doubt I'll eat any tonight, but it sure smells good.
See? That's not a crappy day, and nary a relative in sight.
