The 30+ Club

I've been meaning to write a Ruminations on thirtysomething for a while now. Last week's birthday makes this an especially appropriate time, but the fact of the matter is that I've had every symptom for strep throat [minus the fever] off and on for the last week. I thought I was getting better, but wikkid sore throat is back and it's harshing my creativity.

My birthday was fairly spectacular albeit in a low expectations kind of way. Celebrations started Thursday evening, Birthday Eve as I like to call it, with a joint birthday dinner in honor of myself and the friend whose proper birthday it was. I spent the evening in the company of friends - a smattering of the oldest, closest, and newest friends plus a couple of distant social acquaintances. We had a noisy dinner filled with caesar salad, Zachary's pizza and the clincher, home made chocolate cake.

Chocolate cake was once a mission critical birthday element for me, a birthday just wasn't done properly without it. Although I've since moved on to eclairs, chocolate birthday cake has a special place - especially if it comes with a bowl of berries & halved black cherries on the side.

The actual day of my birthday was largely marked by sleep, but I did get a package from my folks (clothes) and many birthday wishes via phone and email. That night I felt brave enough to venture out for ice cream with 7 of my favorite noisy friends. Yes, by the end of the evening, we WERE the problem table. At least we didn't throw stuff and talk trash like the prior problem table, conveniently seated next to us.

You know it's a good birthday when Fire Truck pulls up and handsome firemen get out with lots of plastic hats for the kiddies and the birthday folk. And you get to eat at Fenton's.
