Passover + Easter = Hope & Salvation

According to the calendar, today is Palm Sunday. That means next Sunday is Easter. Millions of Christians the world over will celebrate the redemption of their lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus as you might have heard could not be conquered by death and rose to sit at the right hand of god his father, the ultimate human sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. It's kind of a gory story, but it is a tale of hope and salvation.

Meanwhile Passover begins this week. It offers a different kind of salvation story. Passover, as you might have heard, occurred the night that God's Angel of Death flew over Egypt killing all the first born sons. The tenth plague from G-d to free the sons of Abraham, enslaved by the Egyptians. They sacrificed lambs and marked their doors with the blood. In those homes, the firstborn children were not slaughtered in their sleep. This night was the last straw and finally brought freedom. The Jews fled Egypt leaving servitude behind.

I find a lot of similarity between the two celebrations, but what I find most interesting is that these are spring festivals. Easter could not happen without Pesach, Christ was a Jew. He was celebrating the end of slavery of his forefathers. Easter and Passover go together with Spring. Spring is nothing but renewal and rebirth. Hope springs forth with the advent of new, tender lifeforms, babies, tiny green things, little animals on wobbly legs, tiny finches making nests.

I'm neither Christian nor Jew, but I wish you all the blessings of hope and salvation, in the coming week and year.
