Fleas, Naughty Dog (Feliz Navidad)

Greetings from my home, the frostbitten tundra abutting the Christblood mountains. As per to normal, it's freezing. Not normal is the patchy white stuff dotting the landscape. When I lived in San Francisco it snowed once on Christmas. Here, Yuletide snow is only a slightly more frequent occasion.

My tierra natal is a poor, yet catholic country. Christmas is a big deal, but we make do with meager resources. Our idea of Christmas decorations means a gross (or three) of lunch sacks, equal numbers of votives and a cubic yard of dirt. I spent the evening wandering the back alleys of my hometown admiring the amber glow of 10,000 candles in homemade paper lanterns. They line sidewalks and top walls. Small bonfires mark street corners and driveways. They are a good place to warm your hands in the sub-freezing temperatures, but beware the drunken carolers who couldn't keep jingle bells in tune if their life depended on it. When they start Carol of the Bells it's best to ignore the sheets of black ice coating the street and make a run for it.

A cafe near the historic district handed out hundreds of cups of hot apple cider and traditional Christmas pork & popcorn stew. It was delicious. They even had veggie popcorn stew on one burner. There was live music going and people seemed very jovial. it was a nice place to pause before heading home.

I've made a jillion gingerbread cookies. I also made some experimental pumpkin pie shortbread cookies that came out amazingly well.

Warm Yule wishes to all of you. May the triumph of the Oak King bring good things to you in the coming year. I hope you have safe, fun and loving holidays wherever you may be.
