I really see only about 4 movies a year, but this year I may see a few more. I'd been looking forward to it for months. Then the reviews came out, sending my expectations through the floor, while failing to squelch my desire to actually see the movie.
Instant messenger thoughts with friend:
QIR: I saw that SuperDan wrote about HHGTTG, did you see it as well?
Denvergirl: Yup, I liked it muchly, I liked that it carried the spirit of the books
Denvergirl: I thought it was visually gorgeous and I thought all the casting was terrific
QIR: I wanted more Alan Rickman, but then, you know how I am about Alan Rickman
Denvergirl: I thought his voice was perfect
QIR: That's because he has the perfect voice...
I am always happy to show up to a movie featuring Alan Rickman!
Kudos:
- the Vogons were actual (jim henson) creatures, not CGI
- the expansive and wondrous planet factory, a much better use for CGI
- did I mention Alan Rickman?
- the fidelity to the spirit of the books
- the YARN! that bit of cleverness alone justified my discount student ticket
- the actress who plays Trillie is HOTT HOTT HOTT!
Not such a fan:
- the hollywood shower scene, Roll Eyes!
- dorky depressed computer costume. I'm haunted by the thought that this must be the terrible lovechild of the dorky computer from the Buck Rogers series from the 70s and a Teletubby, dressed to look like the Stay Puff marshamllow man. Alan Rickman deserves better!
- As EEK said, Mos Def mumbles.
Considering those are my only complaints, I'd call this a successful adaptation.

Yarn? I don't remember any yarn.
I agree with you about Marvin. Isn't he supposed to roll? I always pictured him rolling.
I really didn't like the Arthur/Trillian romance. It seemed forced (and caused several cheesy scenes; since when does Arthur snap out of his self-absorption for long enough to lie awake nights wondering if she's The One?)
