I don't much like pie, but in these parts heading to the snow without making the obligatory pie stop at the Pies-made-in-heaven shop just seems wrong. Of course, PMIH was closed when we drove by on Friday night as we headed for the hills. However, other members of the group also know about the obligatory PMIH stop and picked up Marlonberry cobbler.
Marlonberry as you may know, is a variant of the spelling of former DC mayor Marion Berry, who also happens to be a purple berry similar to a black berry. I don't necessarily approve of his approaches to mixing the mixing of duty/civic responsibility and pleasure/coke, but he makes a splendid purpleberry cobbler.
On day 2 of the mountain experience someone else visited obligatory PMIH stop and bought a take and bake razzleberry pie. It was runny, I think more because the oven temp was too low and not enough moisture escaped, so that the end result was more like fruit soup with pie crust, yet it was delicious as well.
The snow was also delightful. Even though it's only January there have been enough thaw and freeze cycles (not surprising seeing as how it was shirt sleeve weather) to form spring corn snow. We hiked all around on our snow shoes. The terrain was quite hilly, so it was a good workout with beautiful views. A very dense fogbank in the distance looked like an immensely expansive snowfield. After lunch we had lots of down hill to contend with, so I got to practice a lot of glissading manuevers. I was willing to tackle some steep stuff, but as I was the only one with poles, the rest of the group was much less enthusiastic about that idea. In the mountain you go with the group consensus, so we went back the less exciting way.
Yay for the mountains and snow, I needed a fix.
